CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE

Fortunately, the Catalina Island mule deer do not suffer from Chronic Wasting Disease which is a horrendous and fatal neurological condition currently devastating mule deer populations throughout 31 states. It’s continuing spread presents a challenge to Wildlife management now and in the future.

Cronic Wasting Disease is currently causing the reallocation of precious time and financial resources that in many states is already affecting the ability to operate many other essential programs. This disease represents an existential threat to the future of an entire species in the long term.

Chronic Wasting Disease is a crisis that must be addressed urgently. The mule deer population on Catalina Island represents what could very well be the key to preserving a disease free population due to our unique isolated location. Responsible herd management is entirely possible in a manner that protects both Catalina Island and this precious wildlife resource.
